Common questions
What is the initial psychiatric consultation like?
Every consultation is unique and caters to each individual and their specific goals. The initial psychiatric evaluation focuses on the reason for the visit, the history of present illness, a review of past psychiatric and medical history and treatment, a review of alcohol and drug use history, family history, and social history.
It is standard for the provider to discuss the primary issues and concerns in your life during the consultation, which may last around fifty minutes. It is common to schedule a follow-up evaluation to determine the effectiveness of treatment. Psychiatric treatment can be short-term, focusing on a specific issue, or longer-term, addressing more complex issues or ongoing personal growth. There may be times when you are asked to take certain actions outside of the psychiatric evaluation sessions, such as discussing your thoughts and feelings with a therapist or keeping records to track certain behaviors. Here are some things you can expect from the psychiatric evaluation:
Compassion, respect and understanding
Perspectives to illuminate persistent patterns and negative feelings
Real strategies for enacting positive change
Effective and proven techniques along with practical guidance
Is medication a substitute for therapy?
In some cases a combination of medication and therapy is the right course of action. Working with your therapist, you can determine what's best for you. It is well established that the long-term solution to mental and emotional problems and the pain they cause cannot be solved solely by medication. You can best achieve sustainable growth and a greater sense of well-being with an integrative approach to wellness.
Form Completion
Services provided outside of regular medication follow-up or psychotherapy visits may be charged an additional rate. In general, additional fees are based on the time a clinician needs to spend on your request. Your insurance pays for your medical and therapeutic treatment. For example, it does not cover time spent interfacing with school personnel, drafting letters, or completing medical leave or disability claim forms. At the discretion of your practitioner you may be billed for these services and will be informed in advance of these charges. You have the right to rescind your request for these services if you choose. Please note that medical leave and/or disability claim forms are only completed for well-known clients to this practice/provider. Keep in mind that diagnosis of a mental illness is not necessarily equivalent to disability or functional impairment. An individual who has major depressive disorder is not legally disabled if he or she can engage in “substantive gainful activity.” Substantive gainful activity refers to the activity level that SSA uses to establish disability. As a rule of thumb, a disabled individual should not be able to participate actively in the national economy.
There is a $75 per page (in advance) charge for all forms or drafted letters that need to be completed by the provider. During your form completion or letter drafting, the provider is not able to engage in direct care. The time spent can range from 15-90 minutes and is not billable to your insurance. Therefore, this expense is the responsibility of the client and/or their responsible party. Due to the high volume of forms we receive, please allow us 5-7 business days to return the forms back to you. If there is a need for the form sooner, there is an additional $25 “rush” surcharge. Please read all forms before submitting them to us. We cannot falsify dates. Please fill out all portions of the parent’s section, especially any medication your child receives from another provider. All forms must include instructions on where to send the forms once completed, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope if they are to be mailed.
Medication Refill Policy
You must notify your provider during your face-to-face visit if you need a prescription renewal. Our provider will write enough prescriptions to last until your next appointment. No medication refills will be called in after hours or on the weekends. Refills for missed appointments, no-shows, or lost prescriptions are the sole discretion of the provider and are subject to refusal. Our office may charge you for prescriptions written outside your appointment time based on the time required for chart review and prescription call-in or preparation ($50.00 in advance charge). Circumstances and laws apply to which medication can be called into your pharmacy. Please note this will only be done once per calendar year.
Record Transfers
If transferring to our office from another practice, please request the records be released to you and please upload them into your chart before your first visit. If transferring out of our office, please download, complete, and submit our Authorization to Disclose Information. The parent or legal guardian should sign the form if the patient is under 18 years of age and by the patient themself if over the age of 18. There is a $30 fee (per 5 pages) for the copying and releasing of medical records that is due upon submission of the request.
